to do some new projects. Both guys brought so much talent to the table. They really propelled the songs to new heights musically. Dan Elias also played addi- tional guitars. It really was a fucking dream team for me."
I went solo mostly because I was sick of answering to people in a band situation and compromising my vi- sion, especially when I was doing the majority of the work. Many past band situations were a "democracy" when it definitely shouldn't have been. For years I had played in bands and had heart-wrenching experiences- losing band members, hustling hard, going the extra
miles, giving my all and not getting shit back in return. I had been making original music since 1998 and no one really gave a fuck. I was thirsty to spearhead a project where I made all of the decisions and didn't have to commit to having the same band members or band configuration every show. I craved creative free- dom.
For many years, I had whored myself out as a backup singer (or "black-up singer" as I so unaffectionately call it.) While I was singing backup for Taylor Dayne, I would tell her about my band woes. She said some- thing that stuck with me---> "A band is like a noose. Go solo." Cheers to that! Thanks, T.
In hindsight, I don't feel like I wasted time by not fully
doing this earlier on my professional timeline. It feels so right, right NOW, and I have earned my place here. All I want is for what I do to be useful, exciting and satisfying to listeners. Hopefully it makes people feel something, anything... Hopefully it fills a void.
