MOCCA FEST April 11-12/2015
at Center 548
(Can you say Cat)
The Mocca Art Fest is all about illus- tration, comic art and cartoon art. This
fest celebrates new emerging artists as opposed to mainstream comic super- heroes. The Mocca Art Fest is a part of The Society of Illustrators. This time
the location was moved to Center 548
in the Chelsea area. This new spacious set- up works great as there are artists on two
different floors
and also a nice rooftop where visitors can get some fresh air when needed.
Here are a few talented artists who caught my eye: Selina Briggs, from
UK to Bkln, with her cool cat & robot Jelly Empire comic!
A young, inspiring woman, Rachael Dukes draws funny and silly cat cartoons in ‘Frankie Comics.’ In her stories, the cat really takes over. It’s quite amusing, so check out www.mixtapecomics.com Next I caught Mike Turzanski and Peter Lazarski, a couple of talented

dudes who create demon-like mon- sters and women drawn in red and black ink in a very twisted, surreal way. Their comic book, ‘The Million Dollar Comic,’ is put out by www.hopemountainnews.com Narciso Espiritu is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of this really cool zine,
‘Instigatorzine,’ which has some wonderful illustrations and stories by a variety of artists and writers. The magazine is put out in Jersey City. So check out www.instigation.com and have your mind blown by some really thought-provoking ma- terial!
Angela Rizza is an amazing illustrator. She designs really scary crows and owls among other Gothic-like animals. There is such fine detail in her work that it makes these creatures look so real - as if they were alive. You can check out her work at angelarizza.tumblr.com
And, also, Lynnette Franklin and her black cat drawings are so
humorous, like the one of the cathead on an ice cream cone, or the cat in- side of a pineapple. These drawings of her cat are so much fun to look at and you can view her work at www.littlewhiteoctopus.com
Aside from the artists exhibitors on view at the Mocca Art Fest, there are lectures going on at The High Line Hotel. I caught the one on Saul Stein- berg. His work for the covers of the ‘New Yorker’ magazine alone was great and one can learn many interesting things from the talk.
Mocca Art Fest just gets better every year and I look forward to 2016 Mocca Art Fest.

Alternative Movie Posters by matthew Chojnacki
Matthew picks great cult films and changes the artwork of the posters in a very cutting edge way. In this book, you will find very clever transformations and movies like A
Clockwork Orange, Barbarella, Night Of The Living Dead, Psycho, Reservoir Dogs, Logan’s Run and Alien, just to name a few. These original movie posters were designed in a creative way and Matthew does a fantastic job of adding new images to capture the feel of these films!
AC/DC FAQ by Susan masino
It would be one thing for someone to write
known the band since 1977. So her account has extreme depth. She not only talks about their live concerts and recordings in this book but also conducts interviews with band members and people as- sociated with them.
There are many wonderful photos supplied here along with album covers, ticket stubs and docu- mented accounts of all their concerts. Since Susan Masino not only saw their shows but also lived
and breathed their lives, there is no better book on AC/DC then this one, hands down!
MAD’s Greatest Writers: Frank Jacobs: Five Decades of His Greatest Works
For over 50 years, Frank Jacobs has been one of the main satirical writers for Mad Magazine. Every Mad artist has had their drawings used for Frank’s great paro-
dies. In addition to Frank’s writing are also his song par- odies. Some fine examples of his work include a funny take on the 1969 Woodstock concert and If “Peanuts” Characters Aged Like Real People’. Plus, he did many great movies satires, like Star Wars. Frank Jacobs was a truly great comic writer and this book proves that so well.
Brooklyn Spaces by Oriana
Leckert
Brooklyn underground spaces
have become very big in the last
15 years.These DIY spaces
serve for live music shows, art
shows and performance spaces.
It’s quite fascinating looking at the photos of these cool non-commercial buildings. Some of these places still exist and others are gone, but these spaces will always be popping up, as alter- native scenes are where young people can groove. Among the places worth mentioning are ones like Rubulad which has been throwing these underground parties for years; Silent Barn, a place to hear live music and based in Bush- wick.
Sadly, Galapagos, Death By Audio and Glass- lands Gallery closed. But there are still wonder- ful DIY spaces going and new ones on the way. Oriana’s book proves that the future of these Brooklyn Spaces is alive and well!
